Wisdom is not in age, but in the mind
The foundations of Uzbek folklore were laid as far back as the era of the ancient states of Central Asia—Sogdiana, Bactria, and Khorezm. Even then, the first examples of oral folk art were taking shape, including proverbs and sayings. These early forms of folk wisdom reflected the experiences of farming and herding tribes, their observations of nature, and their understanding of human relationships and social laws.
The Great Silk Road had a significant influence on the development of Uzbek folklore. Caravan routes not only facilitated trade but also became channels of cultural exchange. Merchants, diplomats, scholars, and poets from various countries traveled through Central Asia, bringing with them new ideas, images, and expressions. Many Uzbek proverbs retain echoes of this cultural synthesis.
A significant period in the development of Uzbek culture is associated with the Timurid era (14th–15th centuries). During the reign of Timur and his descendants, Central Asia experienced a cultural renaissance. Samarkand and Bukhara became centers of science, art, and literature. Written literature flourished during this period, influencing oral folk art and, in turn, being enriched by it.
Islamic culture also made a significant contribution to the formation of Uzbek proverbs. Many sayings reflect Islamic values and worldview, though they are often intertwined with more ancient, pre-Islamic concepts. This creates a unique synthesis characteristic of Uzbek culture as a whole.
Original of one of the Uzbek proverbs: Ақл ёшда эмас, бошда
Literal translation: Wisdom is not in age, but in the mind
Meaning: Wisdom and intelligence do not depend on a person’s age. A young person can be wiser than an older one if they possess a developed intellect and the ability to reflect.
