Leaving Baikal with gratitude

05.07.2025

The Russian competition “Baikal Cup” in memory of F. Zavelinsky ended in Ulan-Ude. The strongest lineup of this tournament was assembled last year. However, this year there were still many notable names in the tournament. These included young and talented players such as Ivan Dyachenko and Kirill Korobochkin, as well as the winner of the “Il Darkhan Cup 2025” Nikolai Struchkov, and grandmasters such as Mazhit Sarshaev, Dmitry Nikiforov and Bair Rinchinov.

We have been watching the development of this tournament for quite a long time. From the premises at the stadium where the first competitions were held, the organizers have gradually moved to the beautiful halls of the Buryatia Hotel. The level of organization is gradually increasing, as are the opportunities for this tournament. We have heard many foreign draughts players express their desire to participate in this tournament.

Perhaps one day the organizers will come up with the idea of creating a series of international tournaments or an International tournament League. It will be independent of political decisions and based on a professional approach to sports management.

In the meantime… Let’s fall in love with Ulan-Ude. Here, you can climb Bald Mountain and see the city from above. Visit one of the only Datsans, Rinpoche Bagsha, founded by the Buddhist lama from Tibet, Yeshe Lodoy Rinpoche, along with his supporters, with the blessing of the 14th Dalai Lama, as the Buryat Republican Public Institution “Tibetan Cultural Center Rinpoche Bagsha”. In 2009 the Four Seals Bell, Russia’s largest Buddhist bell, was installed.

You will also be able to visit the Ivolginsky Datsan. In the autumn of 2002, the Ivolginsky Datsan acquired the incorruptible body of Khambo Lama Itigelov. In January 2003 a decision was made to build a palace-temple to house the sacred relic. The temple was constructed based on the design of the lost Devajin-dugan of the Yangazhinsky Datsan, which was designed and built by Itigelov himself in 1906. On October 31, 2008, the Blessed Palace of Khambo-Lama Itigelov was consecrated. The Teacher’s incorruptible body was solemnly transferred to the temple.

And also to walk along the beautiful and clean streets of this lively city. Walk along the restored streets of the old city, visit the Ethnographic Museum and get acquainted with the centuries-old culture of Buryatia….

But, we completely forgot about the results.
