To play draughts well, you need to have very good tactical skills. Sometimes, a combination is preceded by painstaking analytical work at the board. Other times, your opponent may be careless or inattentive. However, the excitement of executing a beautiful and elegant combination is truly exhilarating.

Half way to the end of the tournament in Trinidad and Tobago. And already collected a sufficient number of combination examples.

Panchoo, Elena – Petukhova, Galina, Round 2

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen such combinations at the World Championships. And now it’s happening again…

1….  13-19  2. 43-39??  19-23  3. 28:30  35:43

Korotka, Olena – Gangsuhe, Saiya, Round 3

The checkers met and formed a position for a combination.

1…..  14-19  2. 40-35  19:30  3. 35:24  18-23  4. 29:9  20:40  5. 44:35  8-13  6. 9:18  12:34

Tsogtgerel, Tsatsral – Joaquin, Candida, Round 4

The hands reached out to make a trade. And Black missed the combination.

Assuncao Calasans, Carla – Panchoo, Elena, Round 4

The center is the center, but activity can be overshadowed by a combination of

1……  3-9  2. 39-34  20-24??  3. 34-30  24:35  4. 25-20  14:25  5. 38-32  27:38  6. 43:3

Misane, Malvine – Baatarkhuu, Anujin, Round 4

White chose the wrong plan earlier in the game and was unable to find an unexpected escape in this game. The escape in this game should have been sought after the unexpected computer move 1. 37-31!! and the subsequent prediction of the checkmate.

The game proceeded as follows:

1. 40-35?  7-11 (The threat of a Royal Strike has been created) 2. 26-21?? 24-30 and black won.

Misane, Malvine – Tsogtgerel, Tsatsral, Round 5

Again a classic that required a decisive move from White. Play White 1. 28-22!! and the position is saved, but the game continued:

1.39-34??  12-17!  2. 27-22  21-27!  3. 32:12  23:41!  4. 36:47  24-30 and the whites surrendered.

Baltazhy, Olga – Misane, Malvine< Round 3

The white man’s choice was small and difficult. But it was there. The white man made the wrong choice and stepped towards defeat.

1.40-34  24-30  2. 35:24  19:30  3. 33-28?!  23-29!! 4. 34:12  26-31!  5. 37:17  11:44  6. 25:34 and Black played a very skillful game to win.

Pandolfo, Sofia – Sadowska, Natalia, Round 3

Do you see a combination? And there is one!

Sadowska Natalia demonstrated excellent preparation. Black did not understand the opening, and after making only one (!!) wrong move, they fell into the tactical cunning nets of Black.

1.29-23?? 13-18!! 16. 46-41??  18×29  17. 34×23  10-15  (creating a small threat)     18. 39-34  12-17  (creating another small threat) 19. 27-22  (forced) 9-13  20.22-18  13×22 21.32-27 21×32 22.38×18  8-13  23.18×9  4×13 24. 23-18  13×22             25.34-29  17-21  26. 28×26  19-23  27.29×18  24-30  28.35×24  20×4 and the whites have to give up.
