“Shalay-valay” or “Tyap-Lyapushki” from Turkey

Sometimes you play a game. You play and play. You play well. And then you play again and again. And then, bang! Like a bolt from the blue—a blunder! Not just any blunder, but a mysterious and incomprehensible one. We have compiled an anonymous collection of blunders…

White’s move

What could possibly threaten White in this position? The queen is on the main road, so go ahead and move. And White calmly made the move 1. h8-a1?

Black trusted White so much that they responded to kindness with kindness. 1….. g1-a7?? 2. a1-e5! 3. f8:b8 f4-e3 4. b8-e5 with a draw.

But… After 1. h8-a1?, Black had a winning move: 1. ….. c7-b6! 2. a5:e5 c1-e3 3. f8:f2 g1:h9 and paralysis!

Black’s move

White created the conditions for a draw and a small trap. Black avoided the trap and did not make the move 1. …. f8-g7??, as this would have been followed by 2. a3-b4 c5:a3 3. g3-h4 a7:c5 4. h4:h8.

In the game, the move 1. … f8-e7 was made, and then a culture shock occurred! White abandoned the idea of 2. a3-b4 c5:a3 3. g3-h4 a7:c5 4. h4:d8 with a drawish position. But….

2. b6-c7?? a7-b6 3. c7:a5 and… a pause… another one… and… 3. ….. g5-h4?? (a simple move 3….. e7-d6! led to victory)

4. g3-f4 d4-e3 5. d2-c3 e3:g5 and once again the spectators held their breath… what if…

And the spectators were not left without vivid impressions from Tyap-Lyapov in this position.

6. a3-b4?? c5:a3 7. a7-b6 e7-d6 8. b6-a7 h4-g3 with an easy win. A simple maneuver led to a draw: 6. c3-b4 e7-d6 7. a5-b6 c5:a7 8. b4-c5 d6:b4 9. a3:c5 with a draw.

White’s move

Desperately resisting in a hopeless position, White switched to active play:

1. h2-g3 h4:f2 2. c5-d6 c7-b6 3. a5:c7 d8:b6 4. d6-e7 and then…b6-a5?? And a draw opened up to the universe! Any response by White would result in a draw.

But Black had a winning move: 4…… g5-f4! with a win.

The following variation also led to a win: 1. a3-b4 d8-e7!! 2. h2-g3 h4:f2 3. c5-b6 c7-d6 4. e5:c7 e7-d6 5. c7:e5 g5-f4 6. e5:e1 g1:a7.

White’s move

White’s move

White did not decide to win this position immediately with a simple exchange: 1. c3-d4 e5:c3 2. b4:d2 d6-e5 3. h4-g5 h6:f4 4. e3:g5 with a winning position.

In the game, White decided not to win, but to lose.

1. g1-f2 e5-f4 2. e3:g5 h6:f4 and it’s over…

White’s move

Before Black’s last move, White decided to tweak their position and made the move:

1.g1-h2?? Black immediately responded with 1…… c5-d4!!

And considering that the game was played in the Brazilian version, there was no salvation for White.
