One, two, three – king me! Combination like a surprise (part three)

23.09.2023

Sometimes you believe that a grandmaster never falls for combinations. And even more so for one move combinations. But no – an illusion! Even grandmasters sometimes get caught!

In our section ‘From simple to hard’ we always wonder, if it is really all from real games. Is it possible? ‘It is possible!’ we say and offer the fragments from the games of the recent SCO tournament in Ufa. It was already in the first games of rapid and blitz when we saw all kinds of combinations. From a simple “Arrow” to… However, see for yourself!

Mongolian and Brazilian page of this tournament in our third part
Tserenbyamba Erdenbileg – Georgiev Alexander, round 21, game 1, blitz

Today we will devote more time to the Mongolian draughts player than usual. Because he surprised sometimes too often in this tournament.

There were no signs of a storm at the beginning of the game and suddenly…

23. 35-30??? 17-21! And the game ended ahead of schedule.

Alan Silva – Georgiev Alexander, round 15, game 3, blitz

Black got an excellent center in the third match and exchanged on field 27 very quickly.

37… 23-28  38. 33×22 18×27. How to play for white? Maybe make a move on field 30? Or…
39. 37-32??? 24-29!!! – I remembered “Mills of the Gods” by Evgeniy Kondrachenko

Valjuk Andrej – Amrillaev Murodullo, round 8, game 2, rapid

Andrey spent this part of the tournament very unsuccessfully. In the 8th round game, instead of a well-deserved draw, we had to admit defeat.

43. 34-30 12-17. After the last move of black white should have sacrificed a piece with the move 44. 28-22 and attacked 45. 38-33. But followed:
44. 39-33 17-22  45. 28×17 21×12  46. 36-31 12-17  47. 33-28 24-29, and the white gave up.

And in the 15th round Andrey missed the majority.

12. 38-32  13-19?? 13. 26-21! …fast ending of the game

Tserenbyamba Erdenbileg – Alan Silva, round 11, game 2, rapid

In the Brazilian and Mongolian derby  Alan managed to make two combinations in one game!

So, the first one:

6. 32-27 17-21  7. 26×17 12×3  8. 38×27 15-20  and then…

9. 42-38??  23-28!!  10. 33×22 18-23
11. 29×18 11-17  12. 22×11 13×33  13. 39×28 06×17 (classical!)

Tserenbyamba Erdenbileg – Alan Silva, round 11, game 2, rapid

White continued to play as if by inertia. And soon they fell for the second combination.

So, the second one:

17. 37-32?? – the move that completed the defeat of white! 18-22!!
18. 39-33 25-30  19. 35×15 17-21  20. 28×26 14-20  21. 15×24 19×46…Indeed, the combination is a great force!

Сошлись на поле шашки, люди, кони!
Tserenbyamba Erdenbileg – Shaibakov Ainur, round 2, game 1, rapid

Any draughts player can move pieces, but not everyone can see what to do next!

Almost a training example. The outcome was combinational. But only 13 moves were made.

13. 27-22 17×28  14. 33×22 24×33  15. 39×28 18×27  16. 31×22 12-18  17. 26×17 18×27
18. 32×21 11×33  19. 38×18 13×22  20. 43-38 (you need to win back the piece; otherwise how to play further?) 16×27  21. 37-32?? (almost won back) 20-24! (and here’s a counterattack for you!)

Li Zhenyu – Chizhov Alexey, round 9, game 1, rapid

One center is different from another. And it seems like the center is powerful, but then the enemy’s second “echelon” starts working!

28. 27-22?! – a controversial move. But the refutation is not coming soon. 18×27  29. 32×21 16×27
30. 37-32  12-17  31. 32×21  08-12  32. 38-32  06-11. It seems that white are out of position, but there is a nuance..
33. 21-17??  12×21!! – this move was a revelation for white.
34. 26×06 18-22!  35. 28×17 19-23!  36. 29×18 13×11  37. 06×17 24-30  38. 35×24 20×49, and Alexey Rudolfovich added another beautiful victory in his asset.

“Love draughts, and they will love you back!”
