Notes from devoted students and their childhood draughts setups. Part One
Recalling the old days, we wandered down Jomas Street in Jurmala. Across from the hotel with the spa used to stand the famous chess and checkers club. It hosted the USSR and Latvian SSR championships, as well as other equally significant tournaments in various forms of checkers. Vadim Bozhkov, the Andreev couple, Gennady Shapiro, and Emmanuil Merins all came here to play. Many talented draughts players played at the Jurmala club on Jomas Street. On a summer evening, you could drop in and have a blitz match. Or you could just practice.
In recent times, everything was sold off and the club ceased to exist. Now, when we walk down Jomas Street in Jurmala, we pop into a nearby café and reminisce with fellow checkers players from our youth about the old club. Those were good times. Checkers, Jurmala, the beach…
Today we dug out some problems from the archives of the famous coach V.K. Adamovich. We used to solve them when we were little kids, taking our first steps in checkers. Viktor Kuarovich would give each of us one, and we’d try to find a forced win. We invite you to try it too.
