Historical background: Ulan-Ude (Buryat: Ulaan-Ude khotu; until 1934, Verkhneudinsk) is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Buryatia in the Russian Federation. Along with Severobaikalsk, it is a city of republican significance.
It is a major cultural, scientific, and industrial center in Eastern Siberia (geographical region). Since 2018, it has been administratively part of the Far Eastern Federal District (FEFD), where it is the third-largest city in terms of population, behind only Vladivostok and Khabarovsk.
We recommend visiting Buryatia to anyone who is interested in the country’s history, religious history, and, of course, draughts. Last year, when we visited Ulan-Ude, we encountered a very friendly and vibrant city that comes to life in the evening. We also met fans and dedicated draughts players who organize a colorful draughts tournament every year.
The tournament was attended by Russian draughts stars such as Sergey Belosheev and Gavriil Kolesov, and this year, Nikolai Struchkov and Roman Shchukin also participated. If you have the opportunity, come to the checkers festival in Ulan-Ude next year, and you will never regret it.
