With the world in a small tournament

09.09.2025

There has been a lull in the checkers this week. There have been small checkers battles in small federations, and an international tournament with some rain showers has started in Miami.

A rather strange tournament is taking place in Miami these days. It is strange not only in terms of its composition (which is too biased and unattractive), but also in terms of the predicted future associated with it. There are no strong players in the lineup who could serve as “locomotives” for the development of the draughts movement. We are not considering players who are forced to participate or those who are “spineless” and willing to take part in any “foolishness” organized by anyone and anywhere.

We look at it and publish it just for statistics Results

The Estonian championships in Russian draughts in the Brazilian version were held. Given the deep crisis with coaches (in reality, there is only one active coach left) and the ever-deteriorating situation with young players and the quality of results, we were pleased with the number of participants. We are also delighted with the participation of Jahu Heinar, who is still active at the age of 92. At the moment, he is one of the oldest players in the world. Once again, we wish Jahu Heinar good health and strength!

It reminds me of a classic from the era of socialism: “You enter the director’s office or the red corner, and there’s a bust of Lenin. If it’s not there, you feel a sense of dread and fear. What if you’ve mistaken the office?” Alternatively, it reminds me of a classic from the 21st century Western culture: “When you enter a school or kindergarten in the West, you’re greeted by a flag or LGBT symbol in the principal’s office. If it’s not there, you feel uneasy. Is the principal normal?” Why are we bringing this up?

Latvia sometimes hosts tournaments in Russian draughts. In almost all tournaments, Guntars Purviņš wins. It’s never been any other way. It’s quite sad. For 30 years, the same pattern has been repeated. Is this how the development of draughts is progressing?

However, we have noticed that the worse the situation is in small and insignificant federations, the faster candidates from these countries are appointed to positions in international organizations. The era of incompetent management will continue…However, more on that later.
