The White House and the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam

With a population of 617,347 (as of January 1, 2012) Rotterdam is the second-largest city in the Netherlands after Amsterdam. It is part of the large urban agglomeration of Randstad. Rotterdam’s motto is “Sterker door strijd” (“Stronger through struggle”). It is home to two of the largest architectural companies in the country. The Port of Rotterdam is the largest in Europe, and from 1962 to 2004 it was the largest in the world, until it was surpassed by Shanghai.

There are sights to see: the first “skyscraper” in Europe, which withstood the carpet bombing of 1940, and the unique Erazm cable-stayed bridge. There is also the Covered Market and… many other interesting things.

And in these July days the traditional draughts tournament will begin. Here are the welcoming words of the organizers:

‘The international draughts tournament ‘RotterDamsOpen 2025′ is back on the agenda. The tournament has a strong character of different nationalities and ages, who have lost their hearts to draughts. The organization strives to make everyone feel at home: with the large hall, the consumer prices, the delicious “Surinamese” food and of course with the warm welcome. Everyone is welcome!!’
