The FMJD European Championships in Rapid and Blitz will be held in Brussels today and tomorrow. In the capital of Belgium, which is famous for its closeness, you can visit many interesting and picturesque places.
Interesting facts about Brussels.
- Brussels National Airport sells more chocolate bars and chocolate products every year than anywhere else in the world.
- One of the most visited attractions in Brussels is the Pissing Boy Fountain. About 600 costumes were sewn for the small figure of this baby to dress him up on special occasions.
- Another popular place in Brussels is the Atomium, built for the 1958 Expo. This is part of the crystal lattice of iron, the size of which has been increased by 165 billion times. It consists of 9 huge spheres, each 18 meters across, and 20 pipes connecting them to each other. There is an elevator in the central one that can take guests to a restaurant or observation deck in 25 seconds.
- In Brussels you can see not only the Belgian sights, but also iconic buildings from all over Europe – they are gathered in the Mini Europe Park. Miniatures of famous buildings and structures on a scale of 1:75 are placed next to the Atomium.
- Pastry shops in Brussels are preparing their own signature dessert – “Brussels balls”. These are chocolate balls with a variety of fillings – their number is close to 70.
- In Brussels Museum Square is home to perhaps one of the most unusual museums in the world – an illuminated well called the Sinkhole. If you look into it, you can see the exhibits of the Museum of Modern Art.
- St. Michael’s Cathedral in Brussels is the site of all wedding and funeral ceremonies of the royal family of Belgium. The construction of the building, similar to Notre Dame de Paris, lasted 300 years.
- The Sacré-Coeur Basilica in Brussels is one of the five largest churches in the world.
