Breathing in the spirit of Garibaldi and enjoying bergamot tea

02.10.2026

Concepts such as Bergamo dances, the scent of bergamot[7], and the character Arlecchino (also known as Truffaldino) from Italian commedia dell’arte are inextricably linked to Bergamo. This beautiful city in Lombardy consists of two towns. Bergamo is also associated with the name of the great Garibaldi.

And a bit more history: the city is located in the Italian region of Lombardy and serves as the administrative center of the province of the same name. It lies approximately 50 km east of Milan on the road to Brescia and Venice, in the foothills of the Alps, in the Po River valley. Its population is 121,900. The city’s patron saint is the holy martyr Alexander of Bergamo, whose feast day is celebrated on August 26.

And a little more information: The Old Town (Italian: Città Alta, literally “Upper Town”) is the upper part of Bergamo, situated at an elevation of 380 meters above sea level on a hill that is a spur of the Alps, gently sloping down into the fertile Po River valley. It is connected by a funicular to the New Town (Lower Bergamo), which, together with the suburbs, stretches around the hill on which the Old Town stands, both in the valley and on the neighboring hills.

From 1264 onward, the Visconti of Milan laid claim to Bergamo, and in 1407 they were succeeded by the House of Malatesta. In 1428, as a result of the Lombard Wars and following the Battle of Maclodio in 1427, Bergamo was ceded by the Duchy of Milan to the Republic of Venice.

The 16th-century walls from the period of Venetian rule are well preserved. The wall complex of Bergamo includes 14 bastions and one watchtower, as well as four gates

And just very recently: On March 15, 2020, Bergamo became a symbol of the coronavirus epidemic in Italy (4,500 people died there in the first three weeks). On March 26, Russian military personnel arrived there to provide assistance.
